Chapter 43
Overview
As police swarm the Lowells’ home, Millie tries to shield her children and confronts Enzo about the blood she saw on him, but his explanation and tiny cut do not add up. Detective Willard questions Millie on the porch and reveals that Janice Archer observed Millie’s movements and claims Enzo was at the Lowells shortly before the murder.
Willard insinuates Enzo may have been involved with Suzette and potentially connected to Jonathan’s death, then demands to interview Enzo. Millie, rattled, goes inside to bring her frightened husband to the door, raising the immediate stakes for Enzo and their marriage.
Summary
Police flood the Lowell house as Millie watches from her window and keeps Ada and Nico upstairs, feeding them microwave pizza bagels so they will not witness the chaos. Suzette returns about thirty minutes later and appears to sob as Detective Willard informs her that Jonathan is dead, but Millie reads the grief as performative.
In Millie’s kitchen, Millie presses Enzo about where he was and whether he entered the Lowells’ house. Enzo insists he was outside working and heard nothing over his loud equipment. When Millie asks to see the cut that supposedly caused all the blood, Enzo shows a small slice on his palm; Millie privately doubts it could have produced the amount she saw, though Enzo argues hand cuts bleed heavily.
The doorbell rings, and Enzo panics, gripping Millie and begging her not to mention the blood on his shirt. Millie refuses to let Detective Willard inside, keeping the conversation on the porch to prevent him from looking around the house.
Millie tells Willard the truth: she went to speak to Suzette, saw Jonathan on the floor with his throat slit, ran home for her phone, and then heard sirens. Willard says Janice Archer called police after hearing shouting and also saw Millie enter and leave the Lowells’ house.
Willard then adds that Janice also saw Enzo enter the Lowells’ front door about two hours before the “scuffle,” but not leave, implying he exited through the back. He suggests Enzo is often there when Jonathan is not home, pushing Millie toward the idea of an affair; Millie denies it and becomes flustered when Willard asks whether anyone wanted to hurt Jonathan. Willard decides to speak to Enzo directly, and Millie, shaken, goes inside and tells Enzo to come to the door; Enzo rises with visible dread to face the detective.
