Chapter 22
Overview
Enzo opens the hidden door under the stairs and Millie finds Ada and Nico alive inside a sealed, dusty room. Nico confesses he has been sneaking in to use it as a clubhouse, explaining the nighttime scraping sounds, while Suzette notes heavy insulation and hints the room may be structurally unsafe. Although the immediate crisis ends, Millie is unsettled by Ada’s intense distress and the fact that Ada appears to have been crying before they were found.
Summary
Millie stops Enzo for a moment as he opens the hidden door under the stairs, afraid of what they might find. Enzo pushes it fully open, revealing a cramped, windowless storage-like room lit by a flickering bulb.
Ada and Nico are inside, crouched in the corner. Millie and Enzo rush to them in relief and hug them; Nico stiffens at first, then clings to Millie.
Millie notices the room is extremely dusty, with a small pile of rusty nails and a stack of Nico’s comic books. Nico admits he discovered the space and has been using it as a “clubhouse,” explaining the scraping sounds Millie has been hearing at night.
When Millie demands to know why the kids didn’t respond to their calls, Ada and Nico insist they didn’t hear anything. Suzette examines the door and points out a thick layer of insulation that would have muffled sound, and she guesses the room was wallpapered over during renovations, possibly because it wasn’t stable.
Millie scolds the children and insists everyone leave the dangerous enclosed space. As they exit, Ada apologizes repeatedly, visibly distraught; Millie realizes Ada’s eyes looked red and swollen even before they entered, suggesting Ada had already been crying for an unknown reason.
