Chapter 28
Overview
Millie tries to set up a playdate for Nico, only for Janice to ban Nico from her home and label him aggressive and rude. Janice escalates the tension by implying Enzo’s frequent visits to Suzette are inappropriate, claiming she has seen evidence through the windows. The chapter leaves Millie newly rattled about both her son’s behavior and Suzette’s attention on their family.
Summary
Wanting Nico to have normal social time despite being grounded, Millie walks Ada to the bus stop and tries to arrange an after-school playdate with Spencer.
After the kids leave on the bus, Millie asks Spencer’s mother, Janice, about a playdate. Janice reacts sharply, citing Nico’s suspension for fighting and insisting Nico was rude and “aggressive” the last time he was at her house, so she will not allow him back.
Millie defends Nico by explaining he was protecting a bullied girl, but Janice uses the moment to criticize Millie for working and implies Millie’s absence has caused Nico’s behavior to worsen. Millie, though angered, also tries to gauge whether Janice noticed something about Nico that Millie has missed.
Janice then shifts to Enzo, claiming she disapproves of his behavior because he often visits Suzette’s house. Millie insists Enzo is only doing yardwork to build his business, but Janice pointedly suggests the visits occur inside the house when Suzette’s husband is not home and says she has seen things through the windows.
As if to underscore the accusation, Suzette appears outside in a skimpy robe. When Enzo then steps out shirtless to get the mail and wave, Janice concludes with a warning to Millie that watching the cul-de-sac matters—because Suzette is watching too.
