Millie drives home from work unable to stop thinking that Enzo is cheating. Two nights have passed since Enzo snuck out and returned around 3 a.m. smelling strongly of perfume Millie associates with Suzette, and Enzo has continued to insist it was just a random late-night drive.

When Millie arrives at 11 Locust, she sees Enzo’s truck outside, but inside the house she finds only the children’s shoes near the door and no sign of Enzo’s boots. Millie concludes Enzo must be at Suzette’s and decides she is done playing nice; she wants to confront Suzette and bring Enzo home.

Millie storms across the lawns to 12 Locust and leans on the doorbell, but no one answers. The house is quiet, with no sounds from inside and no sign of Enzo working in the backyard, which intensifies Millie’s fear that Enzo and Suzette might be upstairs together.

On impulse, Millie tries the doorknob and finds the front door unlocked. She steps inside and calls for Suzette and Enzo, but receives no response. As she moves into the living room, Millie is hit by a strong, unmistakable smell of blood.

Millie looks toward the stairwell and sees a body on the floor. She recognizes Jonathan Lowell, lying lifeless with a widening pool of blood; his throat has been slit.
