Chapter 77
Overview
Ramirez privately tells Millie that investigators found Suzette Lowell’s fingerprints in the hidden room, implicating Suzette in knowledge of Jonathan Lowell’s crimes. He also reports additional evidence so horrific it makes Millie physically ill, and says Suzette is staying at a hotel and about to be questioned. Seeing a possible way to save Enzo and protect Ada, Millie insists on confronting Suzette first.
Summary
Millie sits in Detective Benny Ramirez’s car and confirms he already knows about Ada, because Cecelia told him everything. Millie admits Ada killed Jonathan Lowell, and Ramirez bluntly says Lowell deserved it, adding, “Like mother, like daughter,” which unsettles Millie and makes her briefly consider confessing her own past to Ada before deciding she cannot.
Ramirez explains he pulled Millie aside for a secret about Suzette Lowell that Millie must not repeat. He reveals that investigators searched the room below the stairs and found Suzette Lowell’s fingerprints, proving Suzette knew about the hidden room and, by implication, Jonathan Lowell’s depravity.
As Millie realizes Suzette may have knowingly exposed children to danger, her anger spikes, but Ramirez says what is coming for Suzette will be worse than Millie’s rage. He adds that police found additional evidence in the room so horrifying it makes Millie feel sick.
Ramirez tells Millie Suzette is currently staying at a hotel and police plan to bring her in for questioning soon. Millie sees potential leverage in this new development—something that might help with Ada’s secret and Enzo’s willingness to go to prison to protect her—so Millie urgently asks if there is time to speak with Suzette before police get to her, pushing Ramirez to drive her to the hotel.
