Chapter 6
Overview
Millie celebrates the kids’ successful first day of school but becomes anxious about impressing Suzette before dinner at the Lowells’. She tries to disguise a supermarket apple pie as homemade and panics when Enzo comes home filthy and forgetful with only minutes to spare. Millie’s desperation reveals how much she craves acceptance into a “normal” life and a higher social standing.
Summary
After school, Nico and Ada come home excited and full of stories from their first day. Nico is already talking about upcoming Little League tryouts and wants Enzo to practice with him, while Ada admits switching schools midyear is harder but says she has made friends.
With dinner at the Lowells’ approaching, Millie gets ready and focuses on what to bring. She has bought a supermarket apple pie, but when she sees how cheap it looks, she tries to make it appear homemade by roughing up the crust and poking the center.
Enzo arrives home with almost no time to spare, covered in dirt from digging a hole. Millie is alarmed because they are due at Suzette’s in fifteen minutes, and Enzo has also forgotten the plan despite it being in their shared calendar.
Millie insists Enzo shower immediately instead of practicing baseball with Nico. Hoping to improve the pie and possibly pass it off as her own, Millie puts it in the oven to serve warm.
As the clock ticks, Millie admits to herself that she feels an urgent need to impress Suzette. Even though she dislikes Suzette, Millie sees friendship with the Lowells as a chance to finally belong to the “normal” life she has always wanted.
