Chapter 49
Overview
Ramirez warns Millie and Enzo that Detective Willard is building a murder case against Enzo, using a narrative of an affair with Suzette Lowell and an insurance-motivated conspiracy. He details damaging circumstantial evidence, including Janice’s photos, motel records, and the gun purchase, raising the likelihood of an arrest and trial. Ramirez brings in a top public defender—only for Millie and Enzo to recognize her, suggesting their defense may be tangled with their past.
Summary
Millie and Enzo arrive home to find Benito Ramirez waiting outside in his black Dodge Charger. Ramirez insists they go inside because he has urgent news that will make Enzo feel even worse.
In the living room, Ramirez explains he used a local contact to dig into the investigation. Detective Willard is actively building a case that Enzo murdered Jonathan Lowell, believing Enzo and Suzette Lowell were having an affair and conspired to kill Jonathan for a recently increased life-insurance payout.
Ramirez lays out how the evidence is stacking up: Janice across the street has been giving police information and took photos of Enzo and Suzette that look suggestive; a motel has a record of Enzo checking in with a woman days earlier; Enzo bought a gun with cash; and Janice claims she saw Enzo go into the Lowells’ house shortly before Jonathan was found dead. Enzo admits Suzette flirted but insists nothing happened and says he was in the backyard working on a garden and did not kill Jonathan.
Ramirez presses Enzo directly, demanding the truth, and Enzo swears he is innocent. Ramirez warns that Enzo will need a very good lawyer, and Millie admits they cannot afford one.
Ramirez reveals he already contacted an unusually strong public defender from the Bronx and arranged for her to help anyway. When she arrives moments later, Enzo reacts with shock, and Millie realizes the lawyer is someone they both recognize, turning the “help” into a new, unsettling complication.
