Chapter 76
Overview
Millie struggles through a sleepless night, fearing Enzo will ruin his life by accepting prison to protect Ada. The next morning, she maintains normalcy by seeing the kids off to school and finally confronts Janice’s cruel gossip about Enzo’s arrest. Detective Ramirez then arrives and insists Millie get in his car to talk before the bail hearing, signaling urgent new developments.
Summary
Millie barely sleeps, haunted by memories of her own time in prison and terrified that Enzo will sacrifice himself by giving up his life to protect their family.
Trying to keep things normal, Millie walks the kids to the bus stop. Janice is there with Spencer on a leash and immediately needles Millie, implying she should be ashamed to show her face after what “her husband did.”
Millie finally snaps back, insisting Enzo is a good man and telling Janice to mind her own business. The kids, hearing Millie defend Enzo, show the first small signs of relief since the arrest.
After the children get on the bus, Millie returns toward her house and sees Detective Benito Ramirez pull up in his black Dodge Charger. Ramirez urgently asks Millie to get in the car because he needs to talk, and Millie agrees despite having Enzo’s bail hearing in less than two hours.
