Chapter 54
Overview
Detective Willard arrives at Millie and Enzo’s house with a search warrant, escalating the pressure on Enzo amid Jonathan Lowell’s murder investigation. Millie rushes the children out to avoid the search and tries to keep Ada and Nico calm by insisting their father is innocent. Despite her outward confidence, Millie privately feels dread that the situation is about to get worse.
Summary
Millie and Enzo are jolted awake by the doorbell and police lights outside 11 Locust. Millie rushes downstairs and finds Detective Willard on the porch with a search warrant, making Millie fear the investigation into Jonathan Lowell’s murder is still focused on Enzo.
Willard agrees to begin searching downstairs, giving Millie time to go upstairs. Enzo, already dressed, is alarmed as officers enter the house. Millie decides to get the children out quickly, showers and dresses, and plans to drive them to school early, hoping to avoid being present during the search.
Millie finds Ada and Nico ready but frightened in Nico’s room, where Enzo reassures them that the police will find nothing and that he is not in trouble. Enzo speaks to the children in Italian, calming Ada somewhat, though Nico remains uneasy. Millie tries to lift their mood by offering chocolate chip pancakes.
At the diner, the kids barely eat and press Millie for the truth: do the police think Enzo killed Mr. Lowell, and why would they search the house? Millie insists the search is meant to prove Enzo’s innocence and emphasizes that Enzo would never hurt anyone unless protecting the family. She tries to project certainty for the children, but internally Millie feels her reassurance is false and senses things are about to worsen.
