Millie learns from Cecelia that Enzo is in a holding cell at the police station, already booked, fingerprinted, and photographed. A bail hearing is scheduled for the next day, but Millie believes they cannot afford bail. She keeps Ada and Nico home from school and talks with them about what happened, realizing Nico’s problems were caused by Jonathan Lowell, not genetics.

At dinner, Nico asks when Enzo will come home, and Millie can only say she hopes soon. Ada, in a small voice, insists Enzo did nothing wrong and asks why he is in jail; Millie explains that police do not simply release someone who denies guilt and reassures them Enzo has an excellent lawyer.

Later, Millie settles the kids on the couch with popcorn and cartoons, but a call comes in from the police station. Enzo has only five minutes, and Millie immediately confronts him about why he would confess. Enzo says he would do anything for Ada and Nico, and for Millie too.

Enzo warns that Ada is in serious trouble because she slit Jonathan Lowell’s throat with a pocketknife. Millie, disturbed, pieces together what Ada did not fully say: Ada stabbed Lowell in the belly, he likely followed and collapsed, and then Ada cut his throat while he was on the floor to ensure he was dead, making a self-defense claim difficult.

Millie begs Enzo to tell the truth and let Cecelia handle things, arguing Ada is only eleven and will not be helped by Enzo going to prison. Enzo refuses to turn Ada in and says Cecelia has not allowed him to confess yet, but implies he may do it tomorrow. As the call ends, Enzo asks Millie to tell the kids he loves them, and Millie is left hoping a night in the holding cell will change his mind.
