Tricia wakes late after finally sleeping through the night and finds a note from Ethan saying he is downstairs making breakfast. She checks her phone and still has no service, then looks out the window and realizes the snowfall has buried everything, making it clear that they will not be leaving Adrienne Hale’s property anytime soon. As she gets ready, Tricia avoids using Adrienne’s belongings any more than necessary because the house still feels unsettling to her.

Ethan first reacts with shock, but then tells Tricia that the news is actually wonderful and admits that he wanted children sooner than she did, even if he had tried not to pressure her.

Ethan’s enthusiasm relieves Tricia, who had feared anger or disappointment. He says that buying a house has always been tied to his hope of filling it with children, and he affectionately offers to take care of his pregnant wife. That calm breaks when Tricia thanks Ethan for taking the portrait down again. Ethan is confused and says he never rehung it after removing it the previous evening. As they compare what each remembers from the night before, Tricia insists that the painting was definitely back on the wall when she came downstairs at three in the morning, while Ethan insists she misunderstood his earlier answer.

Ethan presses Tricia to consider that she may have been mistaken because it was dark and late, and eventually Tricia reluctantly admits that being wrong is possible. Even so, she remains deeply uneasy. Ethan may be satisfied with a rational explanation, but Tricia ends the chapter more convinced that something is wrong in the house and that someone else may have been moving through it during the night.
