Chapter 46
Overview
Patricia fully confesses that she murdered Cody, Alexis, and Megan at the cabin after discovering Cody’s affair with Alexis, then staged herself as the lone survivor of a supposed intruder attack. The chapter confirms that Dr. Hale correctly identified Patricia as a killer and gained leverage over her through recorded therapy sessions. This revelation reframes Patricia’s victim narrative and explains why Patricia later felt trapped into obeying Dr. Hale.
Summary
Patricia opens by insisting she is not the kind of murderer people imagine, then immediately admits she killed her fiancé, Cody. She explains that two months before their wedding, she discovered Cody was having a serious affair with her best friend, Alexis, after reading their messages on Cody’s phone. Patricia became consumed by the humiliation of being abandoned publicly and convinced herself that killing them was justified.
To carry out the murders, Patricia invited Cody, Alexis, and Megan to a cabin trip. Patricia says she included Megan partly to avoid making Alexis the only extra guest and partly because Patricia disliked Megan anyway. Patricia got everyone drunk and high, chose a rainy night so mud would support her future story about an intruder, and prepared to attack them one by one because she knew she could not overpower all three at once.
Patricia says she murdered Megan first by luring Megan outside and slashing her throat in the woods. Patricia then stabbed Cody in bed and deliberately told Cody why he was dying, wanting betrayal to be Cody’s final thought. Last, Patricia killed Alexis slowly, describing Alexis as the person she hated most because Alexis had been Patricia’s best friend since childhood.
After the killings, Patricia wounded herself in a carefully planned nonfatal way so police would believe she had survived an attack. Patricia went to the police station covered mostly in the victims’ blood and successfully performed the role of traumatized survivor. Although one detective doubted Patricia’s story, Patricia says nobody could prove anything, and her family accepted her as both victim and hero.
Patricia then explains that her mother pushed her into therapy with Dr. Adrienne Hale. Patricia enjoyed the deception and believed Dr. Hale accepted the false story, but Dr. Hale eventually revealed that she saw through Patricia’s lies. Once Patricia realized Dr. Hale had recorded the sessions and had evidence of Patricia’s slips, Patricia says she had no choice but to do what Dr. Hale demanded.
