Chapter 50
Overview
Tricia confesses that she murdered Adrienne Hale, buried her body elsewhere, and spent years believing she had escaped suspicion. When Adrienne's house is put up for sale, Tricia returns during the blizzard to remove Jamison's hidden corpse before it can expose her, but instead finds incriminating evidence and realizes Luke knows the body in the house is not Adrienne. The chapter overturns the mystery by making Tricia both Adrienne's killer and the person now scrambling to contain the truth.
Summary
Tricia admits that Adrienne Hale was far from her first victim. Looking back on earlier killings, Tricia recalls murdering a teenage tormentor named Whitney Young, then later Cody and Alexis, with Megan and her grandmother also dying because Tricia chose violence or let them die. This history establishes that Tricia is experienced, remorseless, and unshaken by killing.
Tricia then reveals what happened to Adrienne. After killing Adrienne, Tricia buried Adrienne's body off a deserted dirt road about two hours away, believing she handled the crime more intelligently than Adrienne had handled Jamison's corpse. Tricia intended to return immediately to Adrienne's house, use the keys she kept, and find Jamison's hidden body, but Adrienne had a date that night and the police were all over the property by the next morning, preventing Tricia from searching.
Because the police never found Jamison's body and never came after Tricia, Tricia was able to move to Manhattan, start a new job, meet Ethan, and marry him. For a time, Tricia believed she had escaped the consequences of killing Adrienne and could live normally.
The situation changes when Tricia learns from Judy that Adrienne's old house is being cleaned and prepared for sale. That news terrifies Tricia because cleaners, agents, and buyers might discover Jamison's corpse, and Tricia fears old casino footage could still connect her to Jamison. Because Tricia is pregnant and refuses to risk prison, she chooses to return to the house during a blizzard, hoping the weather will give her time to search undisturbed.
Inside the house, Tricia finds the hidden room and expects to find the body there, but instead discovers something even more dangerous: a recording of Adrienne blackmailing her. Tricia realizes that if anyone hears that tape, authorities could connect her to both Adrienne's disappearance and Jamison's death. She also finally learns where Adrienne hid Jamison's body, but the sight and smell of the decaying corpse make Tricia believe she may not be able to move it herself.
By the end of the chapter, Tricia adds Luke Strauss to her list of problems. She now knows Luke did not kill Adrienne, and she thinks he may have truly loved her, but she also understands that Luke knows the body under the floor is not Adrienne's. With that knowledge in Luke's hands and the corpse still hidden in the house, Tricia concludes that she must plan her next move with extreme care.
