Tricia wakes at two in the morning in Adrienne Hale’s house and finds Ethan missing from their bed. Still thinking about the failed attempt to remove Edward Jamison’s body and Luke Strauss tied up in Hale’s office, Tricia goes downstairs in Hale’s robe and slippers to look for Ethan.

In the dark living room, Tricia sees Ethan crouched by the fireplace, finally getting a fire started. She stays hidden long enough to watch Ethan throw a series of cassette tapes into the flames and wait to be sure they burn.

When Tricia confronts Ethan, she immediately recognizes the tapes as recordings marked “GW,” which belonged to Gail Wiley, Ethan’s mother and one of Hale’s former patients. Tricia reflects that she had already listened to some of Gail’s therapy tapes and had long known Gail feared Ethan would kill her for insurance money.

Tricia also reveals, in her own thoughts, that Gail later died after a fall down the stairs, leaving Ethan a large insurance payout. That story made Tricia obsessed with Ethan because she believed he was capable of doing ruthless things to get what he wanted, much like she was. Tricia further admits that her relationship with Ethan was not accidental; she deliberately engineered their meeting and brought him to Hale’s house partly so he would be forced to confront the evidence hidden there.

Pressed by Tricia, Ethan first tries to minimize what he is doing and then claims he would never lie to her. Tricia refuses to let him evade the truth. After a tense pause, Ethan finally confesses that Gail’s suspicions were correct and admits outright that he killed his mother.
