Chapter 22
Overview
Tricia hides her growing investigation into Adrienne Hale’s tapes when Ethan interrupts, then privately weighs his protectiveness against the warning signs her friends have long pointed out. The chapter deepens Tricia’s fixation on solving Adrienne’s fate and shifts the inquiry in a new direction when she discovers and begins playing a tape labeled with Adrienne’s boyfriend, Luke.
Summary
After EJ’s recorded session ends, Tricia concludes that EJ seemed to be forcing Dr. Adrienne Hale to keep seeing him, likely through blackmail. The idea unsettles Tricia, and EJ’s voice disturbs her so much that she briefly doubts whether she wants to keep listening to his sessions.
Tricia’s investigation is interrupted when Ethan knocks and enters the office. To hide what she has been doing, Tricia quickly shoves the tape recorder into a desk drawer and pretends she is working on her résumé. That lie leads Tricia into private reflections about her unemployment, her old clickbait-magazine job, her reluctance to face job-hunting again, and how house hunting and pregnancy have become excuses to postpone looking for work.
Ethan reacts by questioning whether Tricia should even be job searching with a baby coming, then reassures her that he would be happy to support her financially. Tricia is flattered and comforted by Ethan’s attention, even as she remembers that her friends have called his behavior a series of red flags. Ethan shows her that he retrieved his laptop from the snow, decides he does not want the office because it lacks natural light, and checks repeatedly that Tricia is all right before leaving her alone.
Once Ethan goes upstairs, Tricia admits to herself that listening to the tapes has become addictive. Driven by her need to learn what really happened to Dr. Hale, she searches the desk again and notices one tape labeled “Luke,” apparently Adrienne’s boyfriend. Curious why Adrienne recorded him, Tricia removes EJ’s tape, inserts Luke’s, and presses play.
