Chapter 23
Overview
Driven by fear after the threatening video, Adrienne asks Luke to install a security system at her isolated house, using the project to regain some control and drawing him closer in the process. Their evening together reveals Adrienne’s growing attraction to Luke, her pride in The Anatomy of Fear, and her ethically dubious habit of secretly recording patients on tape. The chapter matters because it deepens the Adrienne-Luke connection while highlighting the hidden recordings that will shape the larger mystery.
Summary
Adrienne arrives early at the free clinic because she wants to find Luke, who has recently seemed to appear whenever she is working. Gloria tells Adrienne that Luke is in the documentation room helping Dr. Griffith with charting software, and she also gives Adrienne a thank-you card and cheap chocolates from a former patient, Lola Hernandez. Although the card briefly reminds Adrienne of her value as a doctor, she is preoccupied with saving her career and securing her home.
Adrienne interrupts Luke while he is patiently helping Dr. Griffith, then asks him to help install a home security system at her house. Luke initially resists because he thinks a professional would do a better job, but Adrienne insists that she wants him specifically and even offers dinner in return. Her urgency comes from the threatening video and from her fear that EJ may be watching or following her, so getting cameras and sensors installed becomes a way for Adrienne to regain a sense of control.
That evening, Luke follows Adrienne to her isolated house and is struck by how large and remote it is. Adrienne shows him the equipment she bought, and Luke gets to work setting up the system while Adrienne waits in her office, trying not to hover. During this stretch, Adrienne realizes she is more drawn to Luke than she expected, which marks a shift from her usual emotional distance from men and dating.
When Luke finishes the installation, he notices a proof copy of Adrienne’s upcoming book, The Anatomy of Fear, and asks about it. Adrienne eagerly describes the book’s focus on survivors of extreme trauma and recounts one especially brutal case study about a woman who survived a knife attack in a remote cabin while the attacker was never caught. The conversation underscores Adrienne’s interest in fear and recovery while also mirroring her own current anxiety about being vulnerable and watched.
Luke then shows Adrienne the completed system, including window sensors, a control panel, and a front-door camera linked to her phone. In Adrienne’s office, Luke notices a hidden tape recorder on the bookcase, and Adrienne admits that she secretly records all of her patient interviews and uses the tapes instead of formal notes. Rather than condemning her, Luke suggests digital recording, and Adrienne, now comfortable and flirtatious with him, invites him to sit on the couch for a mock therapy session, ending the chapter with their relationship moving into more intimate and revealing territory.
