Chapter 36
Overview
Luke returns after erasing EJ’s blackmail video and admits he watched it, forcing Adrienne to face his judgment over the petty, impulsive act EJ had used against her. Although Luke is disturbed by what he learns, he still helps Adrienne leave the drugged EJ at his house, and Adrienne takes that partial forgiveness as a sign their relationship can deepen. The chapter closes with EJ realizing they entered his home and sending Adrienne a death threat, escalating the danger even as Adrienne chooses to dismiss it.
Summary
Luke returns to Adrienne’s house with EJ’s keys, and Adrienne immediately questions him about whether he erased the blackmail video. Luke confirms he deleted the file from EJ’s computer, but he also admits that he watched the video himself. Adrienne is humiliated when Luke confronts her about the footage, which shows her slashing a stranger’s tires. When Luke asks what could have justified it, Adrienne reveals that the man only took her parking spot when she was late for a patient, and Luke is stunned by how petty the cause was.
Adrienne senses Luke’s anger and fears she has lost him. She asks if he hates her, and Luke says he is not happy with her but understands why she wanted the video gone. He also says it helps to know Adrienne is not as perfect as she seems. With that uneasy understanding in place, Luke shifts the focus back to the immediate problem and says they need to get EJ back to his car.
Afterward, Adrienne rides home in her Lexus with Luke beside her, feeling relieved and almost euphoric. Luke has helped load the unconscious EJ into his Porsche, driven EJ back to his house, and left him there still passed out in the passenger seat. Because EJ had controlled Adrienne for months with the video, Adrienne now believes the crisis is over. Grateful and affectionate, she tells Luke she loves him and asks whether he wants to move in soon. Luke brightens for the first time that day and agrees.
When they arrive at Adrienne’s house, her phone buzzes with texts from EJ. EJ accuses her of breaking into his house and then sends a second message saying he is going to kill her. Luke notices something is wrong, but Adrienne chooses not to show him the messages because she believes EJ is only lashing out and does not intend to act. To keep Luke calm and preserve the sense that the situation is under control, Adrienne says nothing is wrong, blocks EJ’s number, and follows Luke into the house.
