Chapter 19
Overview
A therapy tape shows Adrienne Hale treating Gail, an elderly patient whose paranoia has escalated to the point that she refuses medication because she believes her pharmacist is trying to poison her. Adrienne’s methodical attempts to challenge Gail’s delusions reveal both her clinical control and the kind of unstable fears she routinely manages.
The session ends suddenly when Adrienne receives an urgent text and immediately reschedules, turning an ordinary appointment into another suggestive interruption. The abrupt cutoff adds tension to the larger mystery surrounding Adrienne’s final days.
Summary
A transcript captures Adrienne Hale conducting session 89 with Gail, a sixty-eight-year-old widow identified as suffering from paranoid delusions. Adrienne immediately notices Gail is unusually anxious and learns Gail has stopped taking her prescribed medication.
When Adrienne asks why, Gail says she believes her pharmacist is trying to kill her by swapping her pills for something dangerous. Gail treats the pharmacist’s wink as proof of malicious intent, while Adrienne pushes back and suggests he may simply have been friendly. Adrienne keeps steering Gail toward the pattern in her thinking and reminds her that she has made similar accusations before, including claiming that the mailman wanted to kill her.
Gail remains unconvinced and expands her suspicions to her own son, arguing that he might accept her death because he would receive insurance money. Adrienne tries to help Gail recognize the delusional nature of these fears, but the session is interrupted when Adrienne’s phone buzzes. After checking the message because it may involve a patient emergency, Adrienne abruptly ends the appointment and tells Gail they must reschedule.
