Chapter 11
Overview
Tricia cuts short her secret listening session and hides Adrienne Hale’s tape before Ethan catches her, but the chapter shifts from curiosity to rising dread once the couple settles in for the night. Ethan’s borrowed men’s clothes, the choice to sleep in Adrienne’s bedroom, the unlocked door, and the lack of communication all deepen Tricia’s sense that the house is not safe. The chapter heightens suspense by showing how isolated Tricia feels even beside her new husband.
Summary
After listening to about forty minutes of Adrienne Hale’s therapy tape, Tricia realizes she has stayed in the office too long and that Ethan will soon come looking for her. Adrienne’s voice has drawn Tricia in, especially as the doctor calmly reassures the traumatized patient from The Anatomy of Fear. When Tricia hears Ethan approaching, she quickly ejects the cassette, returns it to its case, and hides it in Adrienne’s desk before Ethan enters.
Ethan finds Tricia in the office and lightly questions whether she has been searching through the desk. Tricia avoids explaining herself and leaves with him. She immediately notices that Ethan has changed into blue jeans and a Yankees T-shirt he found in a bedroom drawer. Because the clothes are far too large to have belonged to Adrienne, Tricia assumes they belonged to Adrienne’s boyfriend, Luke, which makes Ethan’s casual use of them deeply unsettling to her.
As the storm continues, Ethan tells Tricia they have no choice but to spend the night in the house and leads her upstairs. Tricia is disturbed by the darkness and by the thought of staying overnight in a place connected to Adrienne’s death. When Ethan heads for the master bedroom, Tricia resists because Adrienne slept there, but Ethan argues that it is the largest room and the only bed already prepared.
Tricia finally agrees, partly because she is suddenly exhausted, a fatigue she connects to her secret pregnancy. Once inside the room, Tricia immediately tries to lock the bedroom door because she still fears that someone else may be in the house. Ethan tells her the door does not lock and dismisses her worry, reasoning that Adrienne would not have needed a bedroom lock while living alone in such an isolated place.
That only increases Tricia’s anxiety. She notices the house seems to have no landline despite the poor cell reception, and she worries about how they will get out if the storm does not lift. Ethan tries to reassure her that Judy knows where they are and that Tricia’s family will notice if she does not check in, but Tricia remains tense. In bed, Ethan quickly relaxes and falls asleep against her, while Tricia lies awake feeling trapped and unsafe rather than comforted.
