Chapter 10
Overview
On the hidden tape, Dr. Adrienne Hale conducts a second session with PL, a young woman suffering severe PTSD after surviving a cabin attack that killed her fiancé Cody and her friends Megan and Alexis. PL recounts waking to a knife-wielding intruder, being stabbed herself, and escaping while the killer remained uncaught.
The recording reveals how consumed PL is by survivor’s guilt and by fear that the murderer is still hunting her. Adrienne tries to steady PL with firm reassurance, making the tape important both as a portrait of PL’s trauma and as evidence of a dangerous unresolved crime tied to Adrienne’s past.
Summary
A recorded second therapy session begins between Dr. Adrienne Hale and PL, a 25-year-old woman being treated for PTSD after surviving a violent attack. Adrienne notes that PL looks pale, and PL admits she has not been sleeping because recurring nightmares make her feel as if the trauma is happening again. Although PL says talking about the attack is difficult, Adrienne presses her to describe the night in her own words so treatment can move forward.
PL explains that she, her fiancé Cody, and her friends Megan and Alexis had rented a cabin for a weekend getaway and were enjoying themselves despite the rain. In the middle of the night, PL woke to Cody screaming and found a man standing over the bed with a knife and blood on Cody’s chest. PL could not clearly see the attacker’s face, but she vividly remembers his wet hair and a strong smell of wet dog mixed with something rotten, a sensory memory that still haunts her.
As PL breaks down, she says the attack destroyed her future: Cody, whom she was about to marry, is dead, and Megan and Alexis are dead as well. PL reveals that she was also stabbed, leaving a scar on her stomach, and that doctors told her she nearly died. Adrienne tries to reframe the event by telling PL that surviving, escaping through the rain and mud, and flagging down help proves PL is a survivor rather than someone defined only by the attack.
PL then describes the ongoing consequences of the crime. She cannot sleep, cannot keep a job, and cannot stop imagining that the killer is watching her or following her, especially because he was never caught and PL believes she is the only one who could identify him. Her fear is so intense that she worries he may even have followed her to Adrienne’s house.
Adrienne insists that PL is safe and argues that the killer is unlikely to come for her now, describing him as impulsive rather than methodical. When PL says she is not getting better, Adrienne responds with certainty that healing will come with time and treatment. The session ends with Adrienne promising PL that she will recover, underscoring both PL’s fragility and Adrienne’s confidence in her own ability to help.
