Chapter 44
Overview
While Ethan is gone, Tricia reenters the office to replace the stolen tapes and confronts a still-bound but increasingly mobile Luke. Luke upends the apparent solution to Adrienne Hale's disappearance by claiming the body under the floorboards is not Adrienne, citing clothing Adrienne would never have worn and hinting that he knows the victim's identity. The chapter deepens the mystery around the corpse and shows that Tricia, despite trying to restore order, still withholds one tape to pursue the truth on her own terms.
Summary
Alone in the house while Ethan is away, Tricia forces herself to go back into Adrienne Hale's office to return the tapes she stole from the hidden room. Tricia tells herself Luke cannot hurt her because he is still bound with duct tape, but Tricia is unsettled when she finds that Luke has already worked himself from lying down into a sitting position on the couch.
To reach the desk, Tricia has to move close past Luke, which increases her anxiety. Luke tries mild conversation and asks Tricia to loosen the tape because his fingers are tingling, but Tricia refuses. As Tricia starts gathering the tapes, Luke says he has something important to tell her: he does not believe the body under the floorboards is Adrienne Hale.
Luke explains that when he saw the remains, he noticed scraps of clothing, including blue jeans. Luke insists Adrienne never wore or even owned blue jeans, so he concludes the corpse cannot be hers. Tricia initially dismisses this as manipulation, but Luke's reasoning unsettles her because Tricia also noticed Adrienne did not seem to own jeans. When Tricia asks if Luke knows who the dead person is, Luke says he thinks he does and quietly insists he did not kill her.
Shaken by the implication that the body may belong to someone else, Tricia stops arguing and focuses on restoring the hidden room before Ethan returns. Tricia reopens the secret compartment, carefully replaces the tapes in their original order, and makes the room look untouched. However, Tricia makes one deliberate exception: after returning everything else, Tricia keeps a single tape in her pocket, choosing to hide that piece of evidence instead of fully undoing what she took.
