After Tricia and Ethan have sex in the house, Ethan is cheerful and affectionate, while Tricia studies him and tries to reassure herself that he is a good husband despite his flaws. In his good mood, Tricia sees what seems like the perfect chance to tell Ethan that she is pregnant.

Tricia almost tells him, but the words will not come out. Her hesitation sharpens into a disturbing thought: they are alone in an isolated house where no one could hear them and there is no easy way to leave. Tricia immediately tries to dismiss that fear as pregnancy hormones, even while admitting to herself that Ethan has a temper, and she tells him only that she is tired.

When Ethan says he wants to take a shower in the master bathroom, Tricia is unsettled and looks for reasons to stop him. After confirming the recorder still works and rewinding the cassette, Tricia overcomes her scruples about listening to private therapy sessions and prepares to hear what is on the tape.
