Chapter 8
Overview
Tricia discovers that Adrienne Hale’s hidden room contains thousands of cassette recordings of private sessions, a find that suggests Adrienne kept a vast secret archive and may have preserved evidence tied to her disappearance. Tricia escalates the secrecy by stealing one tape and hiding the discovery from Ethan, while also concealing her pregnancy because she fears his temper. Ethan’s fantasy of making the house their home and his impulsive removal of Adrienne’s portrait deepen Tricia’s sense that the house is dangerous, intrusive, and still dominated by Adrienne’s presence.
Summary
After opening the hidden door behind the bookshelf, Tricia steps into a small, dark room and pulls a cord to turn on a single lightbulb. Instead of a body or valuables, she finds a tightly packed archive of cassette tapes filling the shelves. The tapes are labeled with initials, numbers, and dates stretching back nearly a decade, and Tricia notices several marked with the initials PL, which makes her wonder if they are recordings of the patient from The Anatomy of Fear. One tape stands out because it is labeled only LUKE, which reminds Tricia of the man once suspected in Adrienne Hale’s disappearance.
When Tricia hears Ethan calling for her, she realizes she has been gone too long. Before leaving, she impulsively steals one PL tape, hides it in her coat pocket, switches off the light, and carefully closes the secret room so the bookshelf looks untouched. Back in the living room, Ethan proudly tells Tricia he has gotten the heat working and found a bottle of wine. Tricia considers telling Ethan about the hidden room, but decides not to because she is sure Ethan would stop her from listening to the tapes.
As Ethan pours wine and toasts “our new home,” Tricia reveals in her thoughts that she is pregnant and has been hiding it from him. Tricia explains that she and Ethan had agreed to wait at least two years before having children, but antibiotics seem to have interfered with her birth control. Because Ethan has a temper and reacted harshly to an employee in the past, Tricia fears he will react badly to the pregnancy. Instead of telling him, Tricia only pretends to drink the wine and cautiously mentions children to test Ethan’s mood; Ethan laughs and says maybe in a few years.
Ethan grows affectionate and imagines the two of them living in the house, but Tricia remains uneasy under Adrienne Hale’s portrait. When Tricia admits the painting is giving her the creeps, Ethan removes it from above the mantel and turns it to face the wall. Rather than feeling relieved, Tricia becomes more disturbed, thinking that they are intruding in Adrienne’s house by drinking her wine, moving her portrait, and stealing from her secret archive. When Ethan resumes kissing Tricia and suggests they “christen” the house, Tricia cannot enjoy the moment because she still feels watched and unsettled.
