Chapter 20
Overview
EJ gains direct leverage over Adrienne by sending her video of herself slashing a car tire, then using the threat of public exposure to force his way back into her life. When Adrienne lets him into her house and agrees to resume weekly sessions, the chapter establishes a dangerous reversal of power: the psychiatrist who thought she understood EJ is now trapped by him.
Summary
After abruptly sending Gail away in the middle of a session, Adrienne checks the message that interrupted her. EJ has texted her a video link showing her in the Bronx parking lot beside the red Jetta that took her space. When Adrienne watches it, she sees clear footage of herself looking around and slashing the tire with the knife she carries in her purse.
Adrienne tries to justify the act to herself as retaliation for a stolen parking spot, but she immediately understands the damage the video could do. EJ texts again, joking about the scandalous headline the footage could create, and Adrienne realizes her reputation and career could be ruined if he releases it. When she asks what he wants, EJ replies that he is standing outside her front door.
The threat makes Adrienne feel newly unsafe in her own house. She considers calling the police but decides against it because EJ has not technically attacked her, and involving authorities could expose the incriminating video. Believing she knows EJ well enough to manage him, Adrienne unlocks the door and lets him in.
Inside, Adrienne confronts EJ for following and recording her, but EJ falsely claims their meeting at the strip mall was a coincidence. Adrienne recognizes that he is lying from a familiar facial tell, yet that knowledge does not help because EJ still controls the evidence. EJ then reveals his demand: he wants Adrienne to resume treating him.
Adrienne refuses to continue the therapeutic relationship and offers to refer EJ to someone else, even volunteering to pay for the sessions herself. EJ rejects every alternative and insists that only Adrienne will do. Under pressure, Adrienne bargains him down to two sessions a month, but EJ pushes until she gives in to weekly appointments. He promises that an hour a week is all he wants, but Adrienne notices his tell again and understands that even this agreement rests on a lie.
