Chapter 45
Overview
A therapy transcript reveals a major twist: Dr. Adrienne Hale believes her patient Patricia fabricated the story of a mysterious cabin killer and actually murdered her own fiancé and friends. When Patricia realizes Adrienne is ready to expose her, Adrienne does not call the police but instead tries to blackmail Patricia into solving Adrienne’s own dangerous problem. The chapter recasts Patricia as a potential killer and shows how far Adrienne is willing to go in manipulating others.
Summary
The chapter is presented as a transcript of session 185 between Dr. Adrienne Hale and patient PL, later identified as Patricia. Patricia begins by telling Adrienne that she is moving to Manhattan for a new job and will have to end therapy. Patricia thanks Adrienne for helping her recover from the trauma that followed the violent deaths of her fiancé and friends.
The conversation changes abruptly when Patricia says she still hopes the man who murdered her fiancé and friends will someday be caught. Adrienne replies that the killer will never be arrested because he does not exist. Adrienne directly accuses Patricia of inventing the story about a male attacker at the cabin and says Patricia actually murdered the victims herself, then gave herself a minor stab wound to make the story believable.
Adrienne explains why she believes Patricia is guilty: over three years of therapy, Adrienne has noticed inconsistencies in Patricia’s story, and Detective Gardner had already suspected Patricia but lacked proof. Adrienne also offers a motive theory, suggesting Patricia believed her fiancé Cody was cheating on her with Alexis, while Megan became collateral damage. Patricia initially calls the accusation insane and threatens to leave.
When Adrienne says she wants privacy to call the detective, Patricia stops and asks what Adrienne wants instead. Adrienne reveals she has a problem involving someone who has been troubling her and says she cannot handle it herself. By addressing her as Patricia and implying Patricia knows exactly what she means, Adrienne makes clear that she intends to use Patricia’s guilt as leverage to have Patricia eliminate someone for her.
