Chapter 30
Overview
A quiet lunch exposes troubling cracks in Ethan’s carefully controlled image. His oddly specific knowledge about pregnancy, followed by a sharp, defensive outburst when Tricia asks about his parents, deepens Tricia’s sense that he is hiding important parts of his past.
The chapter also raises the pressure of their isolation, as Tricia and Ethan realize they may be stuck in the house until Monday. Even as Tricia grows more afraid of both the house and what she does not know about her husband, Ethan doubles down on his plan for them to buy it and build their future there.
Summary
In the present, Ethan insists on making lunch for Tricia because she is pregnant. His care seems thoughtful, but Tricia is unsettled when Ethan knows that pregnant women should not eat cold cuts unless they are heated. When Tricia asks how he knows that without internet access, Ethan awkwardly says he read it long ago, which leaves Tricia privately wondering why he would have been researching pregnancy years earlier.
As they talk about the baby, Tricia says she feels she is having a girl and suggests naming a child after Ethan’s parents. That suggestion immediately changes Ethan’s mood. He says he was not close to his parents, refuses to explain their conflicts, and becomes openly angry when Tricia keeps asking questions.
Ethan slams the knife down and accuses Tricia of always needing to know everything about everyone. Tricia backs off and apologizes, and Ethan says talking about his parents brings back bad memories and that he only wants to move forward with her. Although Tricia agrees to drop the subject, the outburst makes her more wary and reinforces how little she knows about her husband’s past.
During lunch, Tricia and Ethan turn to their immediate problem: being trapped in the house by the snow. They worry that Judy may not realize they are there and conclude that no one may start looking for them until Monday. When Ethan notes they may have to spend another night in the house, Tricia is distressed, and the tension grows when Ethan says they will be living there soon.
Tricia tries to gently resist buying the house, saying they should not rush and might find something better. Ethan strongly disagrees, calling the house perfect and imagining them raising their children there. Tricia cannot admit how frightened she is of the place, so she lies and tells Ethan she can picture that future too.
