After another makeshift dinner of microwaved cold cuts, Tricia reassures herself that she and Ethan will finally leave the house in the morning and celebrate their future family somewhere nicer. Their plans are interrupted when Luke starts shouting from Dr. Hale’s office, where he is still tied up and asking for water.

Tricia wants to give Luke at least a drink, reasoning that they would not need to untie him, but Ethan refuses. Ethan argues that Luke could be pretending to be helpless in order to attack them, then cruelly tells Luke he can wait until morning and can urinate on himself if necessary. Luke responds with angry profanity, and Ethan physically guides Tricia away from the office.

As Ethan leads Tricia upstairs, Ethan warns Tricia not to be manipulated and insists Luke is evil because Luke killed Dr. Adrienne Hale. Tricia says little, but internally she recognizes that Ethan is completely wrong: Luke did not kill Hale, and the body under the floorboards is not Hale’s. This leaves Tricia alone with dangerous knowledge that Ethan does not share.

In Hale’s bedroom, Tricia feels guilty about sleeping in the dead woman’s bed, especially because Hale had once blackmailed and threatened her. Tricia notices mustard has stained Hale’s white cashmere sweater and tries unsuccessfully to scrub it clean in the bathroom, as if repairing the stain might ease her discomfort. Ethan dismisses the effort by pointing out that Hale will never wear the sweater again, then embraces and kisses Tricia, urging sex as a way to forget everything that has happened, and Tricia is tempted to accept the distraction.
