Chapter 25
Overview
After their first night together, Adrienne enjoys Luke’s company but quickly wants emotional and physical distance, revealing how carefully she controls intimacy. Over a makeshift late-night meal, Luke discloses his past as a teenage hacker and confirms that his wife died in an accident, deepening Adrienne’s interest while preserving mystery around him.
The chapter advances their relationship into a real date, but it also gives Adrienne a new reason to keep Luke close: she begins to think his technical skills could help her handle EJ. That shift ties romance to strategy and hints that Adrienne may use Luke as much as she desires him.
Summary
After sleeping with Luke Strauss, Adrienne Hale is surprised by how much she enjoyed the encounter, but almost immediately wants Luke to leave rather than stay the night. When Luke says he is hungry, Adrienne leads him downstairs, relieved to have a distraction from both her discomfort and her thoughts about EJ’s threatening video.
In the kitchen, Adrienne and Luke discover that Adrienne has almost no food, so they settle for peanut butter and stale saltines. During their casual conversation, Luke reveals that as a teenager he got into legal trouble for hacking, although his record was kept clean because he was a minor. Adrienne is intrigued by this skill and mentally stores the information for future use.
The conversation turns more personal. Adrienne claims that teachers often disliked her because she was smarter than they were, and Luke lightly accepts her arrogance rather than challenging it. When Adrienne asks about Luke’s past marriage, Luke briefly shuts down, then says only that his wife died in an accident and that he does not want to discuss it further, leaving Adrienne curious and suspicious but without answers.
As the night grows late, Adrienne awkwardly tries to signal that she wants Luke to go home. Luke sees through her hesitation and laughs, admitting that he understands she does not want him to stay over. He says he would have stayed if she wanted him to, but he is also happy to leave, which relieves Adrienne.
Before leaving, Luke insists on taking Adrienne out to dinner despite her instinctive resistance to traditional dating roles. Adrienne finally agrees. Luke kisses her goodbye at the door, and after he leaves, Adrienne looks forward to seeing him again while also realizing that Luke’s computer skills might help her deal with EJ.
