Four months after EJ disappeared, Adrienne returns to the free clinic after a successful book tour, privately reflecting on how she murdered EJ and left his body hidden under the floorboards of her house. She explains that the smell from the corpse forced her to shut down her office for two months, but after buying a chemical odor neutralizer, she restored the room well enough that she believes no one would suspect anything. Because no police investigation has reached her and EJ left little trace of his visits, Adrienne starts to believe she has truly gotten away with murder.

Adrienne remains uneasy about Patricia, because Patricia knows they share guilt over EJ’s disappearance and could become dangerous. Still, Adrienne pushes the thought aside and focuses on work. At the clinic, Gloria sends Adrienne to the documentation room, where Adrienne is stunned to find Luke. Their initial conversation is awkward, but it quickly turns intimate: Luke admits he misses Adrienne, apologizes for abandoning her when she asked for help with EJ, and reveals he deliberately arranged his visit to see her. Adrienne lies that she handled the situation by paying EJ off, then accepts Luke’s invitation to dinner and kisses him, relieved that he does not seem to know the truth.

Later, Adrienne rushes home to prepare for her date, determined not to let Luke into the house because EJ’s body is still there and she fears discovery. She reassures herself that she is not a psychopath and frames the murder as something EJ forced her into. When Adrienne arrives, she sees an Audi outside and at first thinks her former agent Paige may be there. Instead, Patricia is waiting for her. Patricia says she is frightened that someone could trace EJ’s disappearance back to them through casino surveillance footage and demands to know what Adrienne did with the body. Adrienne tries to calm her, insists no one is looking for EJ, and refuses to reveal where the corpse is hidden.

Patricia then guesses the body is inside the house, and Adrienne’s hesitation confirms it. Adrienne repeats that the two of them simply need to keep the secret, but Patricia responds with her mother’s maxim that two people can only keep a secret if one of them is dead. When Patricia grabs Adrienne’s arm, Adrienne instantly understands that involving Patricia was a catastrophic mistake and realizes Patricia is about to turn on her.
