Chapter 30
Contains spoilersOverview
Polly corners Hank, leveraging a shared, signed secret and his past prison stint to stop him from calling the authorities. Hank agrees to let Tegan stay three days, provided she isn’t held against her will. Polly accepts publicly but resolves privately to sway him and keep the baby. Their complicity deepens, raising the stakes.
Summary
Polly confronts Hank, shifting his mood from sadness to wary fear by implying she will expose something they both signed. When Hank protests that it wasn’t his fault, Polly reminds him of his prior two-month prison stint for breaking a man’s nose and his vow never to return.
Hank argues the scheme was Polly’s idea, but Polly stresses his signature—his complicity—as the leverage. The exchange confirms both their names are on the incriminating document, leaving Hank vulnerable if the police get involved.
Pressed, Hank demands to know what Polly wants. She asks to keep Tegan at their house for “a few” more days to avoid the hospital, pushing back when Hank tries to shorten the timeframe. They settle on three days.
Hank makes Polly swear they will not keep Tegan against her will, and Polly agrees. Internally, Polly notes Tegan cannot leave unaided, dismisses Tegan as unfit, recalls past doubts about her own sanity from a newborn nursery incident two years earlier, and vows to make Hank accept her plan to keep the baby.
