Chapter 53
Contains spoilersOverview
Hank confronts Polly about imprisoning Tegan, fearing jail and concluding the only escape would be murder, which he refuses. He forbids Polly from harming Tegan. Polly outwardly agrees but privately resolves to proceed, determined to take the baby and confident her suicide threats will keep Hank from intervening.
Summary
Polly narrates a tense night in bed with Hank, who is distant and uncommunicative. When pressed, Hank admits he is distraught that a woman is imprisoned in their basement and demands Polly explain how this ends without jail.
Hank concludes that the only way to avoid consequences would be murder and, shaken, rejects it outright. Polly floats the idea “hypothetically,” argues Tegan is unfit and wouldn’t be missed, and frames her actions as helping. Hank counters that it’s not their decision and insists they cannot harm Tegan.
When Hank refuses to consider killing, Polly escalates by threatening suicide if he takes Tegan away. Hank, anguished, extracts a promise that Polly will not hurt Tegan. Polly gives the assurance to calm him.
Privately, Polly dismisses Hank’s objections, believing he depends on her and will not betray her. She remains fixated on taking Tegan’s baby, anticipates disposing of the body if necessary, and imagines Hank ultimately assisting so their “family” will be complete.
