Chapter 62
Contains spoilersOverview
With Dennis away, Jackson enters Tegan’s room despite prior restrictions and offers an uneasy apology for defending Simon. During shift change, no nurse responds, leaving Tegan isolated as Jackson implies he has critical information.
The encounter heightens Tegan’s suspicion of Jackson’s involvement and underscores her vulnerability inside the hospital.
Summary
Dennis leaves Tegan’s hospital room to grab food before the cafeteria closes. Exhausted, Tegan starts to drift off when the door opens and Jackson enters. Immaculately dressed but with bloodshot eyes, Jackson surveys her injuries and asks how she is, prompting a tense exchange.
Remembering the officer’s claim that her car was tampered with, Tegan suspects Simon arranged it through a subordinate and worries Jackson could be involved. She asks him to leave, but Jackson insists on speaking and delivers an apology for dismissing her accusations against Simon, saying he is ashamed of covering for him. His demeanor and gaze unsettle Tegan.
Feeling unsafe and wishing Dennis would return, Tegan presses the nurse call button. Jackson notices and remarks that staff are signing out for the next shift, implying no one will respond soon, effectively leaving them alone.
Jackson offers to “help,” which Tegan rejects. He leans in close, his aftershave noticeable, and tells Tegan there is something she needs to know, ending the scene with Tegan isolated and anxious about what he is about to reveal.
