Chapter 14
Contains spoilersOverview
In the powerless basement, Tegan grows suspicious of Hank after noticing a fresh bruise on Polly’s wrist and requests to avoid him. She endures pain, accepts Tylenol, and lies that she has a lawyer husband. As Polly prepares food with pregnancy precautions, Tegan discovers her phone is lost and her pepper spray missing, heightening her vulnerability.
Summary
Hank briefly appears to drop extra blankets, but his size and demeanor unsettle Tegan as she lies in a dark, snow-blinded basement that feels like a tomb. Polly returns with Tegan’s purse and a bag, offers Tylenol and water, and Tegan realizes her phone is likely still in the car buried under snow. The water reveals how dehydrated she is, but the pain in her ankle persists and she worries about lasting damage.
When Polly retrieves the glass, her sleeve reveals a deep bruise on her wrist. Tegan immediately suspects Hank is violent. Polly lights vanilla-scented candles and moves efficiently, while Tegan struggles with discomfort as the baby kicks. In small talk, Tegan pretends to be married and impulsively names her supposed husband “Jackson,” claiming he is a lawyer, to avoid judgment about her pregnancy.
Polly elevates Tegan’s legs despite the pain and asks about Tegan’s destination; Tegan admits she was driving to visit her brother. Discussing food, Polly enforces pregnancy precautions, rejecting cold cuts and hesitating over tuna due to mercury, but ultimately agrees to make a tuna sandwich. Tegan asks that Polly bring the food instead of Hank, and Polly agrees, seemingly understanding the fear behind the request.
Left alone, Tegan steadies herself with the hope of reaching a hospital by morning. As she searches her purse, she confirms her wallet is present but realizes her pepper spray is missing. Coupled with the lost phone and Polly’s bruise, the discovery deepens Tegan’s sense of isolation and danger in the cabin.
