Chapter 8
Contains spoilersOverview
Tegan sets out to stay with Dennis but leaves late and drives into a worsening snowstorm. Determined to disclose the rape and go to the police, she presses on despite hunger and poor visibility. After her GPS fails and she gets lost off the highway, Jackson Bruckner calls unexpectedly, escalating tension.
Summary
Tegan hastily packs a small duffel and runs into her judgmental neighbor, Mrs. Walden, who remarks about yesterday’s shouting and a “gentleman caller,” reminding Tegan of the fallout from the failed hush-money meeting. Short on money, Tegan decides to drive to Dennis’s place for support.
Because she worked one last shift, Tegan leaves near sunset as snow begins. She adjusts to her late-pregnancy body in her aging Ford and calls Dennis for her ETA; he asks about his forgotten flask and presses to know what happened. Tegan promises to explain in person, resolves to tell him she was raped, and plans to go to the police.
Traffic is light and she initially makes good time, but the storm intensifies. Guided by GPS, she exits the highway for a supposed shortcut, skips stopping for food to beat the storm, and soon regrets leaving late as conditions worsen. Snow thickens, visibility drops, and her GPS loses its connection.
Trying to rejoin the highway, Tegan finds herself amid trees on a poorly marked road, wipers at full speed and anxiety mounting over her and her daughter’s safety. As she searches for a route back and considers waiting at a rest stop, her phone rings despite the lost data signal. The caller ID shows Jackson Bruckner.
