Relieved the danger isn’t at their door, Polly resolves to ensure Sadie’s well-being.
Summary
Polly and Hank arrive home to flashing police lights and initially fear the officers are there for them. Realizing the activity centers on neighbor Mitch Hambly’s house, Polly, worried about Mitch’s young daughter, Sadie, rushes into the snow despite being underdressed.
A young officer blocks them at the tape, offering few details. Hank covers Polly with his coat to keep her warm as they listen to radio chatter mentioning a forty-six-year-old male with blunt head trauma. Polly notices drops of blood in the snow and presses for answers.
Hank steps forward and demands to know if they are safe. The officer explains that Mitch, apparently drunk, fell down his front steps, was knocked unconscious, and suffocated face-down in the snow.
Polly confirms that Sadie is unharmed, and the officer says arrangements will be made for her placement. As Hank steadies her, Polly silently vows to make sure the little girl is taken care of.
