Chapter 33
Contains spoilersOverview
With the road reportedly cleared, Tegan pleads to go to the hospital, but Polly delays, citing down phones, unsafe stairs, and fear of medications. A noise upstairs suggests Hank may still be in the house. Tegan’s concern grows as fetal movement slows. Searching her purse, she finds Jackson’s engraved lighter and decides to use it to regain control.
Summary
Tegan worries when her usually active baby barely moves and debates drinking more water despite fearing Hank could drug it. After massaging her abdomen, she finally feels a small poke, but her anxiety remains.
Near noon, Polly brings lunch and says the road is mostly cleared, yet claims Hank is at work and she cannot manage the stairs. A loud groan overhead sounds like footsteps, but Polly calls it the house settling and insists phones are still down. Tegan presses to leave immediately or for Polly to drive to a working phone, but Polly resists and suggests waiting until evening.
Tegan demands hospital care for her severe ankle pain and the baby, while Polly warns against medications and surgery, framing the hospital as dangerous for the fetus. Polly offers only a dusty, rusty wheelchair and invokes the baby’s safety to keep Tegan in place, then leaves after saying they’ll talk later.
Alone, Tegan searches her purse, confirming her phone is gone and her pepper spray missing. She finds an engraved lighter Jackson once gifted her, recalling his support and the later sense of betrayal tied to Simon. Despite conflicting feelings, Tegan holds onto the lighter as a tool and resolves to act.
