Hank carries Tegan to the living room sofa, but with the power and phone lines down and the road impassable, he declares they cannot leave. Tegan breaks down until Polly, introducing herself as a nurse, calms her and proposes moving to their basement “hospital room” for comfort. Despite misgivings, Tegan agrees when the lumpy sofa aggravates her pain.

Hank carries Tegan downstairs to a hospital bed amid darkness, chemical smells, and a lingering odor of decay that unsettles her. The isolation and being below ground make Tegan feel trapped, even as she tells herself they will call 911 in the morning.

Cold and in severe pain, Tegan is bundled in blankets. Polly tries to remove Tegan’s left boot, but the agony is unbearable, so Tegan refuses. They discuss the pregnancy—almost eight months, a girl—and Tegan worries about premature labor away from a hospital.

Tegan asks for pain relief, and Polly offers only Tylenol as safe in pregnancy. Tegan also asks for her purse from Hank’s truck. Polly leaves the flashlight with Tegan and goes upstairs to fetch the Tylenol and purse, while Tegan, alone in the dark, grows increasingly suspicious about the basement’s past and fears what happened to whoever last used the bed.
