Sydney meets her Cynch date, Kevin, who looks nothing like his profile photos. Kevin alternates flattery with insults, pressures her to drink, and openly ogles the waitress, souring the encounter. Sydney relies on a prearranged rescue call, underscoring her caution and the risks of online dating.
Summary
Sydney arrives early for an online date with Kevin, rescheduled from drinks at six to dinner at eight after Kevin claimed to be working late. Based on their texts and his photos, she is cautiously optimistic.
When Kevin appears, he looks nothing like his profile: older, gaunt, different hairline and eye color, with a messy ponytail. Sydney double-checks the app photos, but Kevin insists he is the same person. Deciding to give him a chance, Sydney agrees to sit in a booth with him.
Kevin quickly showers Sydney with praise, calling her “the perfect woman,” then immediately undercuts it by saying her arms are “flabby,” making Sydney self-conscious. The whiplash between flattery and insult shifts the tone of the date and erodes any initial attraction.
A waitress arrives for drink orders. Sydney asks for a Diet Coke, but Kevin pressures her to get alcohol, orders a beer for himself, and a Diet Coke for her while signaling “sorry” to the waitress. As Sydney waits for her friend Gretchen’s planned rescue call, Kevin continues inappropriate behavior by ogling the waitress and commenting on her arms, reinforcing Sydney’s desire to end the date.
