Contains spoilersOverview
Morning brings electricity back, but the phone lines remain dead and the roads unplowed, keeping Tegan trapped. Haunted by the recovered memory of Simon’s assault, she recommits to seeking justice and continues to refuse narcotics for the baby. She maintains a lie about a husband, notes Polly’s worsening bruise, and remembers her missing items, sustaining her unease.
Summary
Through a restless night, Tegan is tormented by pain from her injured ankle and by vivid nightmares of Simon assaulting her. Remembering the truth makes her feel haunted but determined; despite Jackson’s earlier doubt, she resolves to stop Simon from hurting anyone else. She resists taking the two pain pills, proud to endure for her baby, Tuna.
At daybreak, faint light through snow-packed windows signals morning, and the powered bed works—electricity has returned. Polly arrives cheerfully, helps Tegan with a bedpan, and Tegan notices a vivid bruise on Polly’s wrist. Hoping the power means help, Tegan asks to call 911.
Polly explains the phone lines are still dead, there’s no cell service, and several feet of snow bury the house; plows may not arrive until evening or later. Frustrated, Tegan snaps, then apologizes. Polly promises that once phones return they’ll call an ambulance, or Hank will drive Tegan out as soon as the road is plowed. Tegan worries about her ankle and the baby but holds to her decision to avoid narcotics.
Before leaving to make breakfast, Polly asks for Jackson’s number, believing Tegan’s earlier claim that he is her husband; Tegan sustains the lie. After requesting toast, Tegan is left alone, where she again recalls her missing pepper spray and phone, reinforcing her sense of vulnerability and suspicion even as she remains stranded.
