Chapter 48
Contains spoilersOverview
Tegan methodically searches the basement for a weapon but finds only harmless items until discovering syringes and a loose needle. After dropping the needle, she endures pain to retrieve it and assemble a makeshift weapon. She prepares to confront Polly, signaling a shift from survival to active resistance.
Summary
Tegan wheels through the basement, repurposed as a hospital room, hunting for anything sharp. The hospital bed, plastic cup, and nightstand yield nothing but dull pencils. Determined to protect herself and her unborn daughter, she pushes into the bathroom seeking any tool that could become a weapon.
High shelves and the medicine cabinet are out of reach, and the sink drawer initially offers only grooming items. At the back, Tegan finds a plastic bag containing two syringes and a single needle. She plans to attach the needle to a syringe to create a usable weapon.
As she peels the coverings, the needle slips and falls to the floor—now a critical obstacle given her injuries and limited mobility. Anticipating Polly’s return, Tegan maneuvers her wheelchair beside it and fights through spasms and ankle pain.
She flips up the footrest to gain a few inches and manages to grasp the needle. With the syringe and needle secured, Tegan resolves to be ready when Polly comes back, shifting her stance from passive captivity to active defense.
