Katarina sits through the 2002 World Championships medal ceremony as Yelena Volkova and Nikita Zolotov take gold, Arielle Moreau and Lucien Beck take silver, and Isabella Lin and Garrett Lin take bronze. Katarina forces herself to applaud and smile, but internally she is furious and humiliated because she and Heath should have been contenders for that podium and instead are watching from the stands.

Beside her, Heath no longer seems openly angry after their earlier fight; he seems tired and defeated. During the Russian anthem, Heath tries to comfort Katarina by touching her hand and saying they will do better next time. Katarina recoils and challenges the idea that there will even be a next time, because their poor scores have damaged their reputation and may have cost them Sheila Lin's support. Katarina also suspects that part of Heath may want a future away from Sheila and the Lins so he can have her to himself again.

After the ceremony, Katarina walks down to Bella and Garrett without waiting for Heath. She congratulates them, but her behavior is not generous: she deliberately holds Garrett longer than Bella because she knows Heath is watching and wants to hurt him. When Bella suggests celebrating with food, Katarina immediately agrees, choosing that escape over dealing with Heath.

Heath catches up and asks Katarina to go somewhere and talk, then at least talk when she gets back. Katarina stays physically aligned with Bella and Garrett, refuses both requests, and answers with deliberate coldness. By ending the scene with a final refusal and telling Heath not to wait up, Katarina turns their competitive failure into a deeper personal rupture.
