Chapter 82
Overview
During their Olympic free dance, Katarina and Heath skate in complete harmony, pouring their shared history into choreography they created together. The performance transforms a heartbreak program into a declaration of everything they have been to each other: conflict, tenderness, loss, and reunion. When the routine ends, Katarina finally acts on that truth and kisses Heath, openly confirming their emotional reconciliation.
Summary
As Katarina and Heath begin their Olympic free dance, Katarina realizes that although the music is about heartbreak, that is not what she feels. Because they built most of the choreography together during their winter in Boston, the program fits them exactly and lets them skate with unusual intimacy, precision, and trust.
As the routine unfolds, Katarina experiences each movement as an expression of their relationship. The program balances tenderness and force, distance and reunion, mirroring how Katarina and Heath have spent years pulling apart and coming back together. While they skate, Katarina feels their entire shared history at once: adulthood and childhood, elite competition and carefree moments on the frozen lake back home, the exhilaration of risk and the relief of being caught.
When the program ends, the emotional impact remains so strong that Katarina wants to preserve and deepen the moment. Heath presses his forehead to hers, and Katarina stops holding back the impulse she denied herself the night before. Moved by the certainty of what they still are to each other, Katarina kisses Heath.
