Chapter 13
Overview
Katarina thrives under the brutal discipline of Sheila Lin’s academy, but Heath is increasingly unhappy and only endures it for her. As Katarina grows frustrated with Sheila’s absence and fixation on the Lin twins, the Fourth of July practice becomes another test of ambition versus intimacy. When Katarina and Heath struggle through a demanding program and Heath aborts a failed lift to protect her, Sheila finally intervenes, turning their private frustrations into a direct reckoning.
Summary
Katarina explains that life at Sheila Lin’s elite academy is relentless. The skaters are watched constantly by coaches, staff, reporters, and one another, and every day feels like a contest. The physical demands are punishing, but Katarina is exhilarated because she is finally close to the level she has always wanted; by contrast, Heath is quietly miserable and endures the rigid environment mainly because he loves Katarina, with their secret late-night visits becoming his only real relief.
Katarina’s main frustration is Sheila Lin’s absence. Sheila appears only intermittently, often because of her celebrity commitments, and when she is present she gives most of her attention to Bella and Garrett Lin. Although the rest of the staff is skilled, Katarina came to California specifically for Sheila’s coaching and resents receiving guidance only indirectly.
The Academy gives the skaters one day off for the Fourth of July, but the rink stays open, turning the holiday into an unofficial test of dedication. Heath wants to spend the day with Katarina at the beach, but Katarina sees that as wasted time because the pairs are all informally ranked against one another. Katarina knows she and Heath are holding their own, yet she believes that missing extra practice could let another team move ahead, especially with Bella and Garrett clearly occupying the top spot.
At the final practice before the holiday, Bella and Garrett skate with total control and precision, deepening Katarina’s admiration and envy. Nearby, Katarina and Heath work with Sigrid, the Academy’s lift specialist, on a more difficult lift that they will need if they want to compete internationally. The move requires more strength and control than anything they have done before, and repeated attempts end in slips and falls because Heath cannot maintain a secure grip and both of them are exhausted.
When Katarina and Heath finally take the ice for their original dance, the problems continue. Their assigned Golden Age Hollywood program does not suit Heath, who dislikes the Academy’s imposed concept and misses the freedom they once had to shape their own routines, while Katarina tries to trust Sheila’s system and imagines how polished they will eventually look in costume. In reality, they start behind the music, skate stiffly, and reach the difficult lift without enough control to save it.
Katarina immediately senses the lift failing. Instead of forcing the move and risking a bad crash, Heath bails out and grabs Katarina around the waist, managing to keep them both upright. As Heath apologizes and checks whether Katarina is hurt, Sheila suddenly appears beside the rink and sharply asks why Heath stopped, ending the chapter on a moment of scrutiny and pressure.
