Chapter 66
Overview
After speaking candidly at Sheila’s funeral and fleeing back to Illinois, Katarina is shocked when Bella seeks her out at home. While skating together at Katarina’s private rink, Bella clarifies that she and Heath are only friends, says Heath still misses Katarina, and proposes that Katarina reunite with him for a Sochi comeback. The chapter reopens Katarina’s connection to skating, Heath, and the Lin world by turning a buried possibility into a real choice.
Summary
At Sheila Lin’s funeral, Katarina impulsively stands up to speak. She is shaken and barely remembers her words, but she notices Bella’s guarded expression soften while Heath remains unreadable. Unable to face anyone afterward, Katarina leaves immediately, changes her flight, and returns to her isolated life in Illinois, assuming she has seen Heath and the Lin family for the last time.
Weeks later, after a blizzard, Bella unexpectedly arrives at Katarina’s house. Bella says she wanted to see Katarina and admits that Katarina’s harsh funeral speech was the most honest thing anyone said that day. When Bella notices Katarina heading out to skate, she asks to come along, and Katarina leads her through the woods to the private rink she built inside the old stable.
Inside the converted stable, Bella is astonished that Katarina has created her own skating space. Katarina reflects that after Vancouver she tried to bury herself in house repairs and solitary routines, but her body still needed movement, so she used her money to build the rink and slowly taught herself to skate again for her own sake. Bella puts on music, and the two women skate together while Bella remarks that younger skaters still revere Katarina.
The conversation turns to Heath. Bella reveals that her relationship with Heath was never a real romance: it began partly as revenge, then became a friendship built on shared loneliness after Vancouver, though they did sleep together at least once. She also tells Katarina that Heath has been choreographing for younger teams at the Academy and is especially good with boys who lack formal dance training. Katarina is jealous and hurt, but also learns that Bella and Heath relied on each other while Katarina withdrew from everyone.
As they continue skating, Bella says she does not believe Heath hates Katarina and insists that he misses her. Bella explains that Garrett’s breakdown forced her to reconsider her own life, and she now sees herself as a coach rather than a competitor. She then proposes that Katarina reunite with Heath and attempt a comeback for the Sochi Olympics, arguing that the weak U.S. ice dance field makes it possible and that Shaw and Rocha returning would also strengthen the Academy Bella inherited from Sheila.
Katarina recognizes that even asking whether Bella has spoken to Heath means she is interested. She admits to herself that, despite everything, she misses competing and misses Heath profoundly. Faced with the choice between continuing her isolation or reopening that part of her life, Katarina does not reject Bella. Instead, she signals a tentative acceptance by inviting Bella to eat with her.
