Katarina recognizes the note with the blood-filled roses in Sochi as the same message that arrived with a bouquet in Los Angeles, a threat she had never told Heath or anyone else about. Heath explains that in Russian culture an even-numbered bouquet is for funerals and yellow roses signify betrayal or a breakup, making the arrangement an unmistakably hostile message. The blood removes any ambiguity and confirms for Katarina that someone wants to intimidate her.

Despite that, Katarina and Heath spend their first full day in Sochi trying to stay focused. They practice their programs, return to their terrible hotel room, and struggle to sleep because the room is noisy and uncomfortable. During a Skype debrief, Bella is appalled by their lodging, but with no better options available, Katarina and Heath have to endure it.

When the ice dance competition begins at the Iceberg Skating Palace, exhaustion gives way to Olympic excitement. Katarina and Heath take a selfie in the arena for the twins, and Garrett sends an enthusiastic good-luck text. Bella's message is more alarming: Watch your back. Because Katarina already suspects the Russians may be behind both the threatening deliveries and Heath's earlier injury at Rostelecom, Bella's warning hardens Katarina's resolve to stay alert.

Backstage, Katarina sees Yelena Volkova in the dressing room and reads her innocent demeanor as a mask, deepening Katarina's suspicion of the Volkovas. After Yelena leaves, Katarina sits down to put on her carefully polished skates and thinks about the shared history that brought her and Heath to the Olympics and into the record books as Shaw & Rocha. Then, as she slips on her left skate, something sharp drives into her arch, and Katarina screams, revealing that the threat against her has become direct physical sabotage just before the short dance.
