Chapter 19

Overview

Katarina and Heath capitalize on an unexpected opening at Skate America and win their first senior Grand Prix gold, proving they are no longer just hopeful outsiders. The victory also deepens Katarina's attraction to the Lin world of status, approval, and effortless access. But the chapter ends by undercutting that triumph: when Katarina tries to claim her inheritance at eighteen, she learns the account has been emptied by Leland Shaw, threatening the financial future she had been counting on.

Summary

Katarina remembers Skate America 2001 as the first major breakthrough for her and Heath. They only compete because two teams withdraw, and the trip is colored by the tension following September 11; at LAX, Heath is singled out for a "random" search, which enrages Katarina and leaves Heath shaken even though he hides it. In Colorado Springs, Katarina and Heath adjust to the altitude and enter the final phase of competition sitting in second behind the Canadian team.

Before the free dance, Sheila focuses on preserving their silver-medal position, but Katarina and Heath deliver more than that. Their modern, Fosse-inspired program to Fever, which Katarina had doubted as too staged, suddenly clicks in performance, and their chemistry electrifies the audience. They skate with confidence and intensity, post a personal-best score, then wait backstage to see whether the Canadians can beat them.

When the final scores appear, Katarina and Heath discover they have won their first senior-level gold medal. Heath celebrates physically, while Sheila's restrained praise means even more to Katarina than the medal itself because it feels like true approval. The victory marks a turning point: for once, Katarina and Heath are the academy team others envy, and they return to Los Angeles feeling newly important.

Back at the Lin Ice Academy, Bella and Garrett congratulate them, and Bella gives Katarina an expensive new cellphone already loaded with the twins' numbers. Katarina also recounts to the twins how Heath made her eighteenth birthday romantic after the competition, underscoring their closeness. When Heath worries about the cost of future outings, Katarina reassures him that she can now access the inheritance her father left her, while privately thinking about how badly she wants the ease, status, and access that seem natural to the Lins.

During lunch, Katarina calls her Illinois bank to claim the inheritance and imagines how that money, combined with prize earnings and future sponsorships, could stabilize her and Heath's life. Instead, the teller informs her that the account holds no money at all and is actually overdrawn. When Katarina asks who removed the funds, she learns the withdrawals were made by the primary account holder, Leland Shaw, turning a moment of triumph into a devastating revelation about the security she thought she had.
