In the aftermath of the disastrous free dance and her fight with Heath, Katarina throws herself into an Olympic Village party. She drinks heavily and keeps dancing because she cannot face what comes next; without the goal of Olympic gold, her future feels blank and terrifying.

When Bella and Garrett arrive around midnight, Bella tries to check on her, but Katarina turns the encounter into a confrontation. Katarina accuses Bella of deliberately showing her the article about Heath's past right before they skated in order to throw her off and improve Bella's own chances. Bella insists Katarina needed to know and argues that a true champion would not have let the story stop her.

Garrett then challenges Katarina instead of siding with her. He reminds Katarina that she still won an Olympic medal and says Heath clearly loves her, adding that he would give anything to have even a fraction of what Katarina and Heath share. In a drunk, cruel outburst, Katarina blurts out that no one cares Garrett is gay; Garrett is horrified, calls her selfish, and walks away after Bella.

Shaken and sobered by what she has done, Katarina steps outside onto the patio. There she meets Ellis Dean, who first needles her about the bronze medal and Heath's secrets, then unexpectedly gives sincere advice: she should not let Heath disappear again without trying to work things out, because their feelings for each other are obvious. Left alone with that thought, Katarina admits to herself that she cannot imagine a future that does not include Heath.

Back inside, Katarina sees Garrett openly making out with Scott Stanton, a sign that the secrecy she exposed has already broken apart. She returns to her room intending to reconcile with Heath and notices that he has cleaned up the flowers and placed her medal and engagement ring neatly on the nightstand. But when Katarina listens in the darkness, she realizes Heath is in bed with someone else.
