Katarina arrives in Los Angeles for Sheila Lin's funeral, newly visible after years of withdrawal and immediately recognized by onlookers. At Hollywood Forever Cemetery, Garrett greets Katarina warmly and introduces Andre, his boyfriend. Katarina offers condolences and learns that Sheila had kept her cancer secret, which makes Katarina realize Vancouver truly was Sheila's last Olympic chance and that their angry final exchange can never be repaired.

Katarina explains that Heath told her about Sheila's death. Hearing Heath's voicemail after years of little contact left Katarina too stunned to think; instead of debating whether to go, Katarina quickly packed and flew to Los Angeles. Garrett invites Katarina to sit with the family, but Katarina declines, wary of the attention and of seeing Bella too closely.

While they wait for the service to begin, Andre asks whether Katarina still skates, and Katarina says skating is only for fun now. Garrett then reveals that after Vancouver he suffered a serious car crash after overworking himself at the Academy and falling asleep at the wheel. The accident ended Garrett's skating career, but it also redirected his life; now Garrett is studying psychology at Stanford, and Katarina can see that he looks far happier and healthier than he ever did as a competitor.

At the ceremony, Katarina sits alone in the back and scans the crowd, pretending not to search for Heath until she sees him arrive. Heath, now bearded and still physically graceful, does not notice Katarina and takes a seat in the front row beside Bella. The distance between Katarina and Heath remains unspoken, but his closeness to Bella unsettles Katarina immediately.

The funeral proceeds with a secular eulogy, stories from Kirk Lockwood, and a heartfelt speech from Garrett about admiring Sheila and being grateful that Sheila came to know the real Garrett and the man he loves before she died. When the minister invites Bella to speak, Bella cannot rise and begins to shake with emotion. Heath puts an arm around Bella to steady her, and as the minister tries to move the service along, an unexpected voice interrupts to say, "I'd like to say something."
