Chapter 8
Overview
Despite severe pain, Katarina chooses to skate the free dance with Heath and delivers what she believes is the best performance of their careers. Their connection electrifies the crowd and briefly convinces Katarina that the risk has secured a breakthrough result. But the suspenseful start of the artistic marks suggests the judges' response may threaten that hope.
Summary
Katarina gets through the day by reducing everything to small tasks, because her pain is so intense that simple movement feels difficult. When she and Heath finally wait by the boards for their turn, Heath steadies Katarina by standing behind her and breathing with her until they are calm together. Katarina decides that if this is their last competitive skate, she wants to know they gave it everything.
Once they reach center ice, Katarina shuts out the crowd, the announcer, and even much of her pain so she can focus completely on Heath and the program. Skating to a Madonna medley centered on Frozen, Katarina remembers how deeply the music mattered to her before this competition. During the free dance, Katarina relies on training and instinct, and the physical strain transforms into momentum rather than stopping her.
The performance feels like the best skate Katarina and Heath have ever delivered. They finish with a standing spin facing each other, the crowd cheers loudly, and their quick kiss brings even more applause. As they leave the ice, flowers are thrown for them for the first time, and Heath gives Katarina a single red rose, reinforcing Katarina's belief that they may have skated well enough to reach fourth place or even the podium.
Because no coach is with them at Nationals, Katarina and Heath wait for their scores alone. Katarina is ultimately glad for that, because she believes Nicole would have tried to stop them from competing, and Katarina now feels certain skating was the right choice. Their technical marks are strong, with several high fives, and Katarina expects their artistic scores to be even better; but when the first artistic mark appears, her reaction makes clear that something shocking has happened.
