Chapter 51
Overview
Heath's surprise public proposal turns Katarina and Heath's national title into a spectacle that leaves Katarina shaken rather than happy. Although she says yes, she feels pressured by the audience and media attention, and the engagement immediately overshadows their victory.
Bella is the only person who recognizes Katarina's distress, while a private conversation with Heath reveals that he misunderstood what she wanted from such a milestone. The chapter deepens the tension between genuine intimacy and public performance just as Katarina and Heath prepare for Worlds and the Olympic season.
Summary
As Heath drops to one knee immediately after the free dance, Katarina's first reaction is panic and dread. With the crowd cheering, cameras flashing, and her image magnified on the arena screen, Katarina feels she cannot refuse, so she says yes. She grips the ring so hard that it cuts her palm before Heath finally places it on her finger.
Moments later, Katarina and Heath are confirmed as national champions. They continue smiling for the crowd through the medal ceremony and press obligations, but the engagement quickly eclipses their athletic achievement. At the press conference, reporters focus on the ring instead of the performance, and Heath explains that he had it custom-made to resemble Katarina's mother's heirloom ring and had planned the proposal since before the season began.
While Heath presents the proposal as romantic forethought, Katarina privately fixates on a different implication: his concern over hiding the ring means he was distracted during the skate, which could have cost them points and even the title. She performs happiness for the cameras, keeping the ring visible and answering questions, but internally she remains unsettled rather than joyful.
After the press conference, Bella Lin approaches Katarina and immediately notices that her delight is not genuine. Bella congratulates Katarina for her skating, not for the engagement, and their exchange briefly restores Katarina's sense of being seen clearly. Bella also reestablishes their rivalry by promising to challenge her at Worlds.
Later, alone with Heath in the car back to the hotel, Katarina's discomfort becomes impossible to hide. Heath realizes she hated the public proposal and apologizes, explaining that winning in Cleveland felt like coming full circle and that he thought a grand gesture was what she wanted. Katarina assures him that she does want to marry him, but not on the timeline and terms imposed by the proposal's spectacle.
To defuse the tension, Katarina suggests that they focus on winning Worlds before dealing with wedding plans. Heath accepts that there is no immediate rush, saying they have the rest of their lives. The chapter ends with their engagement intact, but with Katarina newly aware that even her relationship with Heath can become a performance that leaves her feeling trapped.
